What Is Shockwave Therapy?
It is an effective, safe and non-invasive treatment that utilizes acoustic pressure waves to penetrate bone and soft tissue. Shockwave therapy is particularly effective in areas where major connective tissue attaches to the bone – such as the foot, the knee, the elbow, the shoulder, the hip and trigger points in muscles throughout the body.

How Does Shockwave Therapy Work?
With a wand-like device, your physiotherapist directs the acoustic pressure waves at the injured area. As these waves penetrate, they effectively increase local blood flow to the area on a cellular level, breaking up scar tissue and adhesions on tendons and ligaments, reversing chronic inflammation and regenerating blood vessels and bone cells. The process of neuro-vascularization fosters an environment that naturally alleviates discomfort by reducing the sensitivity of pain receptors, while also enhancing the body’s innate ability to restore itself, often allowing a return to pre-injury performance levels.
How Many Shockwave Therapy Treatments Will I Require?
The length and number of treatments depend on the severity and duration of the condition being treated. Although complete tissue regeneration can take up to three months, more than 80% of individuals notice a considerable decrease in pain after just three Shockwave sessions, with most finding relief after 5-10 treatments. In clinical studies, Shockwave Therapy has shown a marked improvement in 90% of plantar fasciitis cases; 91% of calcific tendonitis cases; and 77% in cases tennis elbow.
How Long Does Shockwave Therapy Take?
Within a 30 minute Physiotherapy session Shockwave therapy treatment takes about 15 minutes depending on the injury being treated and is often combined with other physiotherapy interventions such as exercise and stretches, taping, mobilizations, heat or massage to strengthen the area and enhance recovery.
