The iconic Rainbow Gateway Markers welcome visitors and residents alike to the Church Wellesley Village, one of the Toronto core’s most vibrant and active neighbourhoods.  According to the Church Wellesley Neighbourhood Association, the Village extends from Charles to Carlton and from Yonge to Jarvis.

Church and Wellesley Village is built on land originally owned by Alexander Wood, a merchant and magistrate in Upper Canada.   Rumour has it that Wood sought exile in his native Scotland in 1810 after a scandal involving his sexual orientation.  When he returned in 1826, he purchased 50 acres of land at Carlton and Yonge.  Today, the Village plays a large role in Toronto’s gay community.

The Church-Wellesley Village is also host to Canada’s largest celebration of Pride Week, attracting over 1 million visitors to the area.

The annual, week-long festivities includes the Pride and Remembrance run and culminates in the Dyke March on the Saturday, and Sunday’s Gay Pride Parade with more than 15,000 participants and over 90 floats.

The Village actively works with both the City of Toronto and Division 51 to create a safe, friendly and colourful downtown community.  It is thanks to its activism that the business sector is growing and you’ll always find something to do in the Village.
